Student Drop-Off & Pick-Up Procedures

Arrival/Morning Drop Off

  • Students may be dropped off no earlier than 8:35am. Only students who are eating breakfast in the cafeteria will be permitted to enter the building before 8:50am.
  • Vehicles may enter the campus from Hunt Road or Alleghany Avenue.
  • Entering vehicles will form two lanes on either side of the center sidewalk island proceeding from the top of the parking lot down toward the building. Vehicles will exit campus from the entrance/exit from where they enter.
  • Please do not park along the sidewalk or in the small parking lot next to the football field.
  • Students may only exit their vehicle once your car is pulled alongside the sidewalk.
  • Parents should remain in their vehicle. If you need to assist your child, you may park in a parking spot in the large parking lot and walk your child to the sidewalk or building.
  • Please ensure your child can exit the vehicle from the side closest to the sidewalk.
  • If you are dropping your child at the sidewalk, do not pass or skip ahead in front of other vehicles. This is a safety issue.
  • Watch your speed as you drive through the parking lot. Despite our efforts and the best intentions, going too fast poses a threat to student and staff safety.
  • Cars should never enter the bus loop, and handicap spots are only to be used by vehicles with handicap tags.

Afternoon Car Rider Line Procedures

Procedures for Families:

  • Enter the car rider line either through the Alleghany Ave. entrance or from Hunt Rd. through the “S-Curves” above the football field.

  • Students will be dismissed to the gym and car numbers will be radioed into the gym as cars reach the top of the parking lot. By the time a car reaches the pickup zone along the sidewalk island, students should be making their way across the crosswalk.
  • Students will begin exiting the building at 3:15pm.
  • Staff will assist students with getting in vehicles. Parents should stay in their cars.
  • After your child is safely in your vehicle, you may pull out and exit with the same direction that the line flows.

Car Rider Dismissal FAQs

I really preferred to wait outside on the sidewalk island and walk my child to my car. Can you just send my child out to me each day?

No. We will not dismiss students to parents who have parked and are waiting outside their vehicle. Adults picking up children will be reminded to remain in their vehicle.

What do I do if my child is not normally a car rider, but I need to come through the line to pick them up on a single day?

Any student may get picked up in the car rider line. If you are picking your child up, but haven’t been issued a car rider tag, please notify the front office of the dismissal change prior to 1:30pm. When you arrive at SWES during dismissal, follow one of the car lines. When you reach the staff member calling numbers into the building, tell that staff member the name of the child(ren) you are picking up, and we’ll make sure they’re on their way out.

I need grandma to pick my child up today, but she doesn’t have a car tag for her vehicle.

A family member or friend may pick your child up who you have authorized to do so. Similar to the response above, call the front office to notify our staff of the change in pick-up person. When that person arrives, they will need to let our staff member calling numbers know who they’re picking up, and we’ll make sure the child(ren) get outside safely.

Grandpa is picking my child up today and he doesn’t know what to do. How is he going to figure this out?

We will always have staff outside to assist with these procedures and monitor student safety. Families are encouraged to share the Car Rider Line Video Tutorial  ( http://bit.ly/SWCar ) with anyone who picks their child up from school.

My child has an appointment right after school and I want to park and walk them from the building to the car.

As parents ourselves, we understand that working with doctors’ offices can be a challenge when scheduling appointments. Please consider our new car rider procedures when scheduling appointments and know that as we continue to refine and practice these procedures, you won’t be waiting long. Additionally, consider signing your child out for appointments prior to 2:30pm to avoid walking through the busy parking lot. We will not dismiss children directly to adults standing outside during afternoon dismissal.

I lost my car rider tag for my dashboard. Can I still pick my child up in the line?

Yes. If you lose your tag, let us know and we’ll print you a new one.

I’m using a different vehicle and I don’t have my tag. Can I still pick my child up in the line?

Yes. If you’re in a different vehicle, tell the staff calling numbers outside who you’re picking up and they will call in the name. We will also issue two dashboard tags to each family at Open House.
